The United Nations Security Council (UNSC), one of the most important United Nations organ, discussed today the plans of action to implement ceasefire at Lebanon. Currently, the Israeli’s incursions in the Blue Line area are concerning the United Nations as much as the Hezbollah group presence in the country.
Delegates and chair members began the session discussing which subject would be debated. The representatives of the UN took more than an hour deciding on that matter. Delegates from different countries of the United Nations were present at the session.
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lebanon, United States of America, Mexico and France were the countries that showed the most ideas of action presented throughout the session. Austria, Brazil, China, Japan, Nigeria, Russian Federation, Turkey, Uganda and the United Kingdom also participated on the debate.
Back in 2006, the UNSC had already released an resolution to solve the Lebanon-Israel conflict called ‘Resolution 1701’, but Israel still is making incursion on the Blue Line Area, a border demarcation that covers the Lebanese-Israeli border.
“We haven’t solved the Israeli issue and nothing has been done. The situation is the same. We have much more to do. We can’t give up on this issue” said Ramoñ Nogueira, delegate of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Ben suggested that an investigation should be done to make sure that the innocent people would not be harmed by the United Nations’ actions to remove the Israeli troops.
Adding up to the discussion, the french delegation brought up the matter of the Hezbollah relation with Lebanon. Their representatives, Felipe Felix and Thales Veras, showed France’s concerns towards the presence of the Hezbollah in the country and addressed to the Lebanese delegate that they needed to know how effective Syria’s and Iran’s influence is on Lebanon.
The Lebanese representative defended his country by saying that they were the country that suffered the most because of the actual situation. Mexico’s delegation blamed the Lebanon for letting the Hezbollah do what their government should be doing. “Hezbollah provides social services. For us it seems like you government has let them take action. You let them be a major player in your country, you let them do things that you should do.”
After some voting and discussing, the council decided that they should make a resolution on how to implement the ceasefire on Lebanon and to remove the Hezbollah group from the country. The Uganda delegate pointed out that one representative of Israel should be part of the discussion. The chair members took the matter into consideration, but gave no definitive answer.
The discussion moved towards the watching of the borders by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the majority of the delegates were in favor of that action. Also, the reinforcement of the troops on southern Lebanon and northern Gaja, with the amount of 15.000 soldiers, was discussed among the representatives. One of the biggest issues brought to the debate was the aftermath of the ceasefire. The delegates agreed on trying not only to cease the fire on Lebanon, but also to rebuilt the country that was crushed by the conflicts.
